Film and Other Myths
Twelve Pianos is a documentary I made about my friend Mauro ffortissimo and the project that we created together called Sunset Piano, placing pianos in unexpected, beautiful, and sometimes crazy outdoor locations. Twelve Pianos was produced, directed, and edited by me under my production company name, Storyfarm.

Most of my professional life has been spent as an editor, and so my approach to filmmaking has always been from the editor’s point of view. The editor is the one who assembles all the many parts into a cohesive vision, and as such is the director’s most important collaborator. In the early days of digital filmmaking, I wrote for several magazines, including Digital Video, RES, and others. I had a monthly column on Adobe’s website called Storyfarm, in which I interviewed the new wave of digital documentarians. While I was teaching at Stanford in the late oughts, I coined the term “digital storytelling,” which had a moment on the internet. I won some awards for my short films and worked with bay area producers on an assortment of projects. Now I work as a consultant, offering help with writing, editing, and direction. Got an idea? Let’s talk.
